Keto vs Carnivore

The ketovore diet, sometimes called the keto carnivore diet, is a blend of the two popular eating styles. So to understand what the ketovore diet is, you first need a solid understanding of carnivore versus keto.

Keto

The keto diet focuses on low-carbohydrate, high-fat foods. Calories from fat generally make up at least 70% of the diet, while calories from carbs usually account for under 10%. In traditional moderate- to high-carb diets, carbohydrates are converted into glucose, serving as the primary energy source for your body and brain. When carbs are drastically restricted with the keto diet, your liver produces ketones from fat. Ketones are an alternative energy source for your body. Once you've been on the keto diet for a few days, and your body's glycogen stores are used up, ketones become your body's main energy source. This is known as being in ketosis.

Although the mechanisms aren't entirely understood, the keto diet is often used to decrease appetite and aid weight loss [1]. Medical professionals have long used the keto diet to control diabetes and epilepsy, and it can potentially improve the health of people suffering from many other chronic medical conditions [2]. People on the ketogenic diet usually eat large amounts of animal products along with nuts and seeds, avocados, and plant oils. They also include small amounts of high-quality plant-based foods like leafy greens and other vegetables [1].

Carnivore

The carnivore diet is a strict type of ketogenic diet in which all calories come from animal products. Unlike the traditional keto diet, you completely eliminate plant-based products on the carnivore diet. The diet is used for weight loss, blood sugar regulation, and as an elimination diet to reduce digestive problems. Research on this diet is still new and long-term health effects aren't fully understood [3].

The carnivore diet is believed to promote weight loss and potentially improve health markers, although its long-term effects and risks require further research.

Ketovore

The ketovore diet combines the principles of the keto diet with the animal-foods focus of the carnivore diet. Although high-fat animal products make up the bulk of the diet, it's less strict than the carnivore diet, and you can choose to include small amounts of low-carbohydrate plant-based foods. You can customize it by eating only meat for part of the week and then incorporating other low-carb foods for a few days, or making all meals a combination of animal products and small amounts of other low-carb foods.

The ketovore diet includes some low-carb plant foods, which have important vitamins, fiber, and beneficial compounds that may be missing in a purely carnivorous diet. This helps make the diet more balanced and nutritious overall.

Is the Ketovore Diet Right for You?

But before starting, be sure to understand the pros and cons of this eating style. The ketovore diet can help with weight loss by putting your body into a state of ketosis. It may also help with digestive issues because it eliminates many food allergens and digestive irritants. However, it's an extremely restrictive diet that isn't yet well-researched [5]. Potential complications include kidney stones and osteoporosis [1]. And you might find it difficult to stick with because your food choices are very limited. Before starting the ketovore diet, consult with a healthcare professional to determine if the benefits outweigh the risks based on your personal health profile.
