Frequently Asked Questions About Our Tests

How can I differentiate between Vaginal Yeast Infection, Bacterial Vaginosis, Trichomoniasis, and Urinary Tract Infection?

To differentiate between these conditions, pay attention to the discharge, symptoms, and vaginal pH:

Vaginal Yeast Infection (Thrush)

This condition is marked by a thick, white discharge that resembles "cottage cheese" in texture. It usually does not have a strong odor. Women with a yeast infection commonly experience intense itching, redness, and discomfort in the vaginal area. The vaginal pH is typically normal, around 4.5 or lower, which indicates that the balance of bacteria and yeast is largely intact.

Bacterial Vaginosis (BV)

BV is characterized by a thin, grayish-white discharge that often has a strong, fishy odor, particularly after sexual intercourse. Women with BV may experience mild itching, or they might not have any noticeable symptoms at all. The vaginal pH in cases of BV is elevated, typically above 4.5, reflecting an imbalance in the normal vaginal flora and a more alkaline environment.

Trichomoniasis

This sexually transmitted infection is associated with a frothy, yellow-green discharge that carries a foul odor. The discharge may be more profuse and unpleasant compared to other conditions. Common symptoms include itching, burning, and pain during urination or sexual intercourse. In trichomoniasis, the vaginal pH is elevated, above 4.5, indicating a disruption in the normal vaginal environment caused by the parasitic infection.

Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)

Unlike yeast infections, BV, or trichomoniasis, a UTI typically does not involve vaginal discharge. Instead, the main symptoms are painful urination, a frequent and urgent need to urinate, and lower abdominal pain. Since a UTI affects the urinary tract rather than the vaginal environment directly, vaginal pH is not a relevant diagnostic factor for this condition.

Key Tip: Use vaginal pH testing and track symptoms. Consult a healthcare provider if symptoms persist. For more details, refer to this Diagnox blog.
